Pilgrim stories are at the heart of tradition here at Canterbury Cathedral and started when monks began documenting the stories of ordinary pilgrims arriving at the tomb of St Thomas Becket. Stories of loss, illness and healing were recorded and later translated into the high-art form of stained glass which still exists in the Trinity Chapel. These everyday stories of ordinary people were honoured in this very expensive high-art form as testament to them, and the influence of Becket. Today we continue this tradition by capturing pictures of pilgrims and showcasing them in a very contemporary way on Instagram, and now offer the chance for pilgrims to tell their stories in greater detail in the footsteps of all who have gone before with the same hopes and dreams, prayers and aspirations. We will then curate a selection to be depicted in panels of art to be exhibited online and here at Canterbury Cathedral, as a continuation of our stained glass tradition.
